Story, Script & Direction : P.Padmarajan
Music: Perumbavoor.G.Raveendranath
Cast :Mohanlal, Sumalatha, Parvathi
A movie directed by late P.Padmarajan, which is based on his own
short story 'Udakappola'. Thoovanathumbikal revolves around Jayakrishnan
who has two entirely different faces. Mohanlal plays the lead with
Sumalatha, Parvathi and Ashokan in the support. A superb script and a good
direction along with Mohanlal's great performance made this movie an
unforgettable one. Perumbavoor G Raveendranath composed some excellent
musical scores for this movie.

Chanthu's (Chathian Chanthu's) point of view. The script was excellent.
Mammooty's National award winning performance as Chanthu along with the

Direction: Sibi malayil
Story & Script : A.K.Lohitadas
Lyrics : Kaithapram
Music: Raveendran
Cast: Mohanlal, Nedumudi Venu, Murali, Urvashi, Lakshmi.
A well-defined story, good songs and great performance by the acting crew,
if in the hands of a talented director will sure be a hit. Bharatham tells
us the story of Kaloor Ramanadhan and Gopinathan who belongs to a family
where music is the religion and tradition. Elder brother Ramanathan was
forced to leave his thrown to his younger brother, once he is addicted to
liquor. But his ego and tensions, in the end, demands him to take a
pilgrimage trip. He is getting killed during that journey and to avoid a
scene for their sister's marriage Gopinathan has to keep this news with
himself. Mohanlal got the national award for the role of Gopinathan and

Direction : Harikumar
Story & Script : MT Vasudevan Nair
Lyrics : Kaithapram
Music: Bombay Ravi
Cast: Mammooty, Manoj.K.Jayan, Narendraprasad, Gauthami, Shanthikrishna.
Death is the ultimate truth.. Each and every cell in our
body has a mind which decides whether the body it belongs to, should live
or die.. M.T.Vasudevan Nair pointed out lots of facts which we haven't
seen or which we never wanted to agree. And no wonder he was honored as
the best story teller that year. Mammooty acts as Ravishankar a Journalist
who has nothing to do , but just to wait for death. With the help of a
doctor who does research in Yogas and medical science he recovers, to know
the fact that he is an alien in his society. Bombay Ravi's musical scores
are also to be mentioned.

Thaniyavarthanam

Direction : Sibi Malayil
Story&Script : A.K.Lohithadas
Cast:Mammooty,Thilakan,Mukesh, Asha Jayaram,Saritha
In his career best role, Mammooty enacts Balan Mash, a middle class schoolteacher
hailing from an old tharavadu. His uncle became a mental patient after the
seperation of his love and this underlined the deep-routed belief among
their family that one male from each generation will become mad. For no
reason balan Mash was labelled as the culprit when every one knew that he
wasn't. Thaniyavarthanam was Lohithadas's first movie as a script writer
and he proved he is a person to be watched.

Paithrukam

Direction : Jayaraj
Story&Script : Kaloor Dennis
Lyrics : Kaithapram
Music:S.P.Venkatesh
Cast:Sureshgopi,Jayaram,Narendraprasad,Geetha
Conflicts between the generations were, once, a hot topic for
malayalam movies. Paithrukam portrays the conflict between ideologies and
believes. Story plot is a small Brahmin family where educated elder son
was against the traditions and practices they were following. With the
death of his brother, he declares a war with his father and the old
beliefs in Brahmin societies. Even though paithrukam was not a commercial
success , it was a movie you can't afford to miss.

with the solution that a young brahmin, who doesn't know what a female is,
should do a yaga to help the country.Vaishali was appointed for that
task. The movie talks about the tragic story of her and her
mother.Bharathan proved that he is one among the best directors in Indian
cinema.Ravi's music also contributed for this hit.

Devadoothan

Direction : Sibi Malayil
Story & Script : Raghunath Paleri
Music : Vidyasagar
Cast: MohanLal, JayaPrada, Jagathy
'A Heavenly Messenger' - The
caption itself should have put an average Malayalee Movie watcher debating
whether to go for the movie or not. After watching it,I still have not
figured out whether they were trying to take a leaf from the Holy Bible or
from the "Bhees Saal Baad", the Dimple Kapadia starrer or from
the famed English Movie "Ghost". The story line has faint
resemblance of "Manichitrathaazhu" too. Mohanlal definitely is trying to get a fresh breath of air after
all that "pond-water mix " cocktail he had in Narasimham, but
unfortunately his attempts do not reap any results.Jayaprada, the most
beautiful face on the Indian screen, as described by the late mastero
Satyajit Ray, has been roped as the female lead. The film is supposed to
be a thirller, but you get the wind of it only after the end.
The music is kind of new but I assume we Malayalees like our music to be simple and
sweet,so I do not think this will strike a chord. Neverthless, the song 'Poove
Poove,...' well sung by Jayachandran has topped the charts in many
countdowns. The movie boasts of yet another well known name in the Indian
cinema, Mr.Santhosh Thundiyil who has wielded his camera for highly
successful ventures like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. This is equally a technical
flawed film as well as a suicidal attempt for the director (Do not get
fooled by the name Sibi Malayil,I did too). One cannot blame the audience
for expecting more from a director of his calibre, who has made movies
like 'Thaniyavarthanam', 'Kireedam' and 'Bharatham' in the past, movies
which any Malayalee can be proud of.

Arayannangalude
Veedu

Story, Script & Direction : A.K. Lohitadas
Music: Raveendran
Cast :Mammooty, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy,
Siddique, Jomol
Swans are messengers of love according to Hindu mythology. That could be the
reason why LohithaDas gave this title to the story of a dream house where
love alone should rule. A good and novel story is indeed the keystone of a successful
movie. But what matters most is the sincerity and dedication in the story
telling . And that is the main reason why I rate this movie as a good one.
We have already seen movies in the same base-line with the son returning
to his tharavaadu after a long time and a few flashbacks thrown in to aid
the script writer. If being different and starting a trend alone was the
criteria for judging any art form, we wouldn't have rated even
M.T.Vasudevan Nair as a literary legend( One could always find the
nostalgia and two women syndrome in almost all his works).
The story begins in Bhilai where Ravi tells his daughters that he will show them
swans, once they are back at his native place, a place where people know
only to love.Mammooty plays the lead role of Ravi who returns to his
tharavaadu after a long time, where he was labelled as a Mudiyanaaya
Puthran. But his dream and real facts stood very much apart. His elder
brother and almost all his siblings tries to gang up against him, making
the place which he called home, nothing short of hell. But he is determined
to bring back the olden days.He could do justice to that to an extent. But
in the end he decided to return to Bhilai , but this time taking his
mother along. The movie ends with the note that he could show the
arayannagal to his kids at his home itself.
Along with Mammooty , Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Siddique,Kaviyoor
ponnamma and the new face Lakshmi Gopalaswamy get good marks for their
performance. Ravindran's musical scores lends magical touch to few songs
like Dheenadhayalo Rama.Camera did what exactly the story demanded. But
one area Lohi seems to have overlooked is the picturisation of the songs.
The lenghty and often dragging conventional shots, like the one in 'Manassin..'
where the single frame covers aged & young hero and his ex-love, looks
bit old-fashioned. The 'Ayeere Holi' song, again, just get manages to make
it as far as the picturisation is concerned. The unnecessary twists and sentimental clashes used to pollute such
types of plots, shows the past records. That is where Lohi stands out as a
script writer. The scenes with the ex-lover should have swooped down, if
it was in some other hands than Lohi's. Through this movie Lohi conveys
the message that Love is the best weapon that anybody can use. And there
are no issues and strifes that human beings cannot solve- It is just a
matter of patience to sit ,talk and settle.. Snehathinte thanutha kattaanu Arayannagalude veedu...!

Thengaashipattanam

Script & Direction : Rafi-Mecartin
Lyrics: Kaithapram
Music : Suresh Peters
Cast : Lal,SureshGopi,Samyuktha Varma,Geethu Mohandas,Dileep,Kavya Maadhavan
The name ThengaashiPattanam put me off a little bit thinking some
kind of Tamil Movie, but this movie was definitely my ticket's worth.A pure
family entertainer! The very much repeated crowding up of actors where the
ouput is marvellous is the main factor for Thenkaashi Pattanam.
Lal and Suresh Gopi has a good chemistry and have a good appeal
together. A story of freindship(Fair smiliraties from the Movie Friends)
,with just small funny hiccups is the movie's heart.Story of rags to
riches and being some kind of kaayanmkulam kochunni sort of 'good rowdy'
for both the main leading characters did actually strike a chord with the
audience. The entry of Dileep was well applauded by the audience(where I
watched the Movie in Trivandrum SreeKumar) pointed very much to the
widening fan base Dileep is having. He was kind of the magical wand to the
Movie and Dileep's perfomance surely makes one predict a bright future
ahead for him. There were
Tamil Movie kind of dance sequences, but then this is targeting to the
family entertainer category. There is no hard story line which you will
think and ponder over later, but overall the earlier trend of full-length
comedy is being well taken care of where timing is an important factor.
The songs were good and well pleasing to the ears. Thanks to the
director,Suresh Gopi had less to do with dancing.Lal has a very much
flexibile way of dancing and he does it well. The three ladies in the Movie
were adding colour, mascara and lipstick to the Movie.I believe such movies
does not have anything to comment on individual perfomance since majorly a
team work and a good one at that! Rating
- Watch it!
